Hello, my name is Janice. I’m an artist living by the ocean in beautiful Byron Bay, Australia.
My home and art studio are located inside two converted shipping containers which I share with my imaginary friend Sebold the maned wolf.
In the garden live possums, carpet snakes, yellow robins, bandicoots, wallabies, cicadas and laughing kookaburras.
Some of the things I love most are rainbows, sea eagles, eating oysters and creating magical paintings.
My work follows the naïve tradition, which is known for its childlike simplicity, frankness, and charm. Most of my artworks are made using Atelier acrylics painted onto boxed wood frames.
I like to bring humour and wonder into my subject matter and create joyful paintings of people, birds, and animals. I also love to make paintings that tell a story about marvellous creatures inhabiting imaginary worlds.
Currently, I’m a member of the Association of British Naïve Artists (ABNA).
A Story to Enjoy
My latest series of paintings tell the story of Princess Brumby:
One day a pretty princess was offering flowers to a wild she-dog in the forest.
Suddenly the princess was shocked to see a pair of blue hands appear in the sky and magically turn the wild she-dog into a fairy queen.
Way above appeared a wicked witch on her raven to snatch the fairy queen’s crown clean off her head.
Before she left the wicked witch cast a spell on both the princess and the fairy queen.
The spell that the wicked witch had cast instantly turned both the princess and the fairy queen into ghoulish ghosts!
As they stood there looking mightily dismayed a hummingbird moth appeared to bless the fairy queen.
She turned back into form and they flew away together.
A pair of magical blue hands appeared from the sky with a mirror to remind the little ghost that she was a princess and to grant her a wish!
Her wish was answered.
She turned into Princess Brumby and lived happily ever after.
The moral of this tale is to never judge a wild she-dog by her fur, and always keep an eye out for blue hands hovering in the sky, as they may just grant you a wish!
